Mile High Music Festival 2009 Wrap-Up: Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real

I got to the main stage (west) just as Lukas was starting up his neo-delta blues rock and roll set. After a short solo jam out, the rest of the band joined him and they broke it straight on down. After only a minute or two, I could plainly tell that these guys were big fans of the old blues heroes. This because crystal clear when they covered Ella Fitzgerald's song How Long, How Long Blues (a terrific song) and did it pretty good justice. Thveir infectious sound had me interested longer than I imagine their contemporaries in their field would have, as their music bordered on the Dave Matthews Band sound (which just about every band who played Mile High was guilty of to some degree) which, while fine, is not really my bag. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by their sound, as I had been expecting a generic jam band. It was a little indie rockish, but pop blues over all.
