I was 1 song in (not counting the intro track) and all ready I knew this was no mere LP. This album is immaculate. It is the perfect pop album. I don't feel right giving it a rating of "Someone to Love More Than Music (<3>)" quite yet ... but that's really only because I've not really had an extended amount of time to spend with it. I can only imagine that by the end of the year, this will either be my favorite album of the year, or it'll be damn close. I mean, the band is comprised of members and/or former members of the Broken West, Papas Fritas, the Bedroom Walls, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Rarely can you go wrong with a line up like that. You know what I really love though? Their art extends further than just the space that this album contains. This band has ... now get this ... "omniphonic" shows. The Faraway Places Modal Energy Music Configuration is an experimental multimedia music ensemble specializing in unique "omniphonic" performances that literally surround the audience.

On August 2 they will perform "The Inverted Pyramid" at Sea & Space Explorations, a Highland Park artspace dedicated to conceptual art and performance. This performance will involve a ring of musicians playing vintage synthesizers around an audience which is reclining while viewing video projections by Terry Chatkupt on the ceiling.

They have performed at several California artspaces, including Machine Projects, Sea & Space Explorations, the Outpost for Contemporary Art, and Southern Exposure in San Francisco. In November they will perform at LACMA as part of an event curated by Machine Projects.

As many as 15 people join core members Chris Colthart and Donna Coppola, creating rhythmic sheets of sound that evoke Alice Coltrane, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Sun Ra, and 60s psychedelic rock.

The Faraway Places also play as a psych/krautrock band, combining experimental techniques with pop songcraft from a bygone era. They are currently releasing their 2nd record, "Out of the Rain, the Thunder & the Lightning." Their debut, "Unfocus On It," received praise upon its release in 2004 on the LA label Eenie Meenie and on Bella Union in Europe.

So Deerhoof has finally accepted that they are an experimental band. They've released the sheet music to their first single off of Offend Maggie before the song itself, Fresh Born, has even leaked. Quite experimental in my book. reactions? well here's a video full of reactions and explanations:

Man, I was harsh

So I've been thinking about it, and I feel really bad about being as harsh as I was to a few of the bands who played Mile High Music Festival, namely Ingrid Michaelson and O.A.R. and the fans of such bands. These musicians work their butts off to make the music that they truly love, and this music truly speaks to the fans of the music, and I was too critical of it. Some of the music I heard at the Mile High Music Festival was just not for me, plain and simple, but I do know that an incredible amount of people went to the festival and had the time of their life, and more power to them. There needs to be more appreciation of the arts in my opinion, and I should not have looked down on some of these bands as harshly as I did. No, no one e-mailed me and told me I was being too harsh, I just thought about how I would feel if I had been reviewed so harshly. Anyway, everyone who played the Festival was there for a reason: they're talented, hard working musicians that good people enjoy.

Mile High Music Festival Wrap-Up Pt. 12, The Last Installment

The Last act I was able to see on Day 2 was Rodrigo y Gabriela, a duo I've been wanting to see live for quite some time (I think the last time they came through was Valentines Day. I had a bunch of friends who saw them and had such a good time that I knew I'd have to see them at some point). I ran into my old Co-worker and friend Kareem who just happened to have a pretty good spot in the crowd, so I joined up with him and before the show we got a chance to catch up. Not long after we got to our spot, Rodrigo y Gabriela took the stage, waved at the crowd, picked up their guitars, and began to beat them like they'd stayed out all night. At one point Rodrigo left the stage, leaving Gabriela to solo, and as soon as Rodrigo came back out, she left so he could solo. I found it to be a very interesting maneuver. In a way, it was them showing us how each of them contributes to the duo. I've never seen so many people have such rapt attention on a guitar playing duo, and that can only be because these two are two of the most talented guitar players I've ever seen. Their modesty and excitement rivaled that of Josh Ritter's the day before, which is something I don't think I'll ever see again. They did their expected cover of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, but unexpectedly covered about 5 or 6 crowd favorites for a few bars, including Seven Nation Army. Pure emotion.

Unfortunately, my band was playing a show Sunday night, so I had to leave early and miss the Flobots and The Roots, but I'm sure Julio and Rachael have those two things well covered too. Not my favorite festival of all time, but I know that if I had enjoyed the music more, I would have had a blast.
